| RJ, Iberia sign agreement |
|
Royal Jordanian and Iberia, the Spanish flag carrier, signed a contract that will smooth travel for frequent flyers of both airlines, facilitating their access to a wider range of route network and, as a result, destinations.
RJ is required to sign and implement such agreements by the fact that it will become a full-fledged member of the oneworld airline alliance; therefore, the airline is expected to sign similar contracts with the other members of the alliance at designated periods of time agreed upon with British Airways, the lead sponsor of Royal Jordanian's entry into the alliance, and in cooperation with these airlines.
The agreement stipulates that RJ's frequent flyer program members are able to earn points on their accounts when they fly Iberia, and vice versa.
In addition to the various advantages and rewards this agreement supplies to the frequent flyers of both Royal plus and Iberia plus, it encourages them to experience new destinations. It is also expected to lead to good financial returns for both airlines.
Iberia is the only airline among the alliance members which has a code-share agreement with RJ on flights between Amman and Madrid.
Iberia, one of the biggest airlines in Europe and its leading carrier to Latin America, was incorporated in 1927; it is based in Madrid, Spain. It operates around 220 aircraft covering 105 destinations around the globe. It carried over 40 million travelers in 2005.
British Airways owns 9% of Iberia shares, American Airlines 1% and other institutions 30%, whereas 60% of the shares are floated on Madrid Stock Exchange.
